Leaves Ain't Left Yet

Maples have had us in their thrall all this fall

Reds, magentas - they’ve sent us into ecstasy

Brought leaf-peeping traffic nearly to a crawl

But other colors are still here for us to see

Each hue takes its turn at star time

The reds will soon have left the building

Orange, next, will go in search of a rhyme

If not dropping, they all will start wilting

Right now the yellows are the most bold

Knock your eyes out, as you drive around town

But, soon, yellow will mellow, yield to gold

Then to rust, then to brown, and then down

Leaves loosen their grip with each freeze

Let go and then float on the breeze

Quick, get out while they’re still on the trees

I’m afraid there will be no reprise

But the leaves are not leaving

They can’t get that far

And, you’d best be believing

You’ll not find them by car

The leaves are discovered, they’ve been found!

No, not those, in a vase at the florist

Turns out, they have covered the ground!

And all of our trails in the forest

Let’s go see!
